The Sleeping Beauty in The Wood (part 2 of 2)
He was completely enchanted by her. Although he wasn't very good with words, he told her that he loved her more than he loved himself. His sincere words won the princess’ heart. As the castle came back to life around them, they only had eyes for each other. They sat and talked for hours, until a servant finally announced that supper was ready.
That night, they celebrated with music and a great feast. It was as if no time had passed since the musicians had last played. After the meal, they were married by the castle's chaplain. They hardly slept that night, so happy were they together.
The next day, the prince had to return home. He decided not to tell his parents about the princess and their quick wedding. He was especially worried about his mother, whom he had never trusted. She was rumored to have ogre blood and a taste for eating children. The king had married her for her wealth, not love.
To explain his absence, the prince told his parents he got lost while hunting. His mother seemed to doubt his story.
Two years went by. The prince kept his marriage a secret, using hunting as an excuse to visit his wife. He often stayed away from home for days. During this time, they had two children: a daughter named Dawn and a son named Day.
When the king passed away, the prince became the new king. Protected with his new power, he announced his marriage publicly. His wife entered the palace triumphantly, with their two children by her side.
Sadly, their happiness was short-lived. War broke out with a neighboring kingdom, and the king had to lead his army. He left his family in the care of his mother.
Unfortunately, the queen mother had a cruel plan. With her son away, she was ready to indulge in her ogre desires for human meat. She ordered the head steward to cook little Dawn, only four years old, and serve her with a spicy tomato sauce.
The steward was horrified but knew he couldn't change her mind. When he went to Dawn's room, the sweet girl ran to him and hugged him. Overcome with sadness, he decided to save her. He cooked a lamb, instead, and the queen thought it was very delicious. He hid the little girl with his own wife.
To keep up the deception, the steward didn't tell the young queen about his plan. He wanted to make sure the queen mother truly believed Dawn was gone.
Eight days later, the wicked queen mother wanted to eat Day, the three-year-old prince. Again, the steward saved the child by hiding him with his family and serving the queen mother a goat, making her think it was Day.
Then, the queen mother ordered the steward to cook the young queen. The steward was unsure he could get away with imitating the taste and texture of a full-grown adult. He decided to warn the young queen about her mother-in-law's evil intentions.
"Please, do it! Kill me so I can be with my children again!" the young queen begged the steward.
But he couldn't bring himself to harm her. Moved by compassion, he decided to trick the queen mother once more. He hid the young queen with his family, where she tearfully reunited with her children. Then he cooked a deer with such perfection that the queen mother was again deceived.
However, the queen mother had a habit of wandering around the palace. One day, she heard Day cries coming from the basement where they were hiding. Recognizing his voice, she knew she had been fooled.
Furious, she commanded a large pot to be filled with poisonous snakes in the palace courtyard. She then ordered her soldiers to bring the young queen, her children, and the steward and his wife, all with their hands tied.
As everyone in the courtyard hesitated, unsure whether to follow her cruel order, the king suddenly returned. He demanded to know what was happening.
Caught in her wickedness, the queen mother knew she had had no chance. She jumped into the pot of snakes herself. The king was saddened by his mother's death but was overjoyed to find his wife and children safe. They all finally had their happy ending.
