Había una vez un hombre y una mujer que desde hace mucho tiempo deseaban tener un hijo, pero no lo conseguían. Finalmente, la mujer quedó embarazada y ambos se llenaron de alegría.
Once upon a time, there was a man and a woman who wished for a child for a long time without success. Finally, the woman became pregnant and they were filled with joy.
Desde la pequeña ventana trasera de su casa podían ver un hermoso jardín lleno de hierbas y flores adorables. Este jardín, que estaba rodeado por una enorme pared, pertenecía a una temida y poderosa hechicera. Nadie se atrevía a entrar en él.
From their house's small back window, they could see a beautiful garden full of lovely flowers and herbs. This garden, surrounded by a tall wall, belonged to a feared and powerful sorceress. No one dared to enter it.
Un día, la mujer estaba mirando por la ventana y vio un área de hermosas plantas de rapunzel. Estaban tan verdes y frescas que anhelaba comer un poco. Su añoranza por el rapunzel creció cada día, y se enfermó mucho.
One day, the woman was looking out of this window and saw a patch of beautiful Rapunzel plants. It was so green and fresh that she craved to eat some. Her longing for the rapunzel grew each day, and she became very sick.
Su marido, preocupado, le preguntó: “¿Qué sucede, querida esposa?”
Her husband, worried, asked her, "What's wrong, dear wife?"
“Si no como un poco de rapunzel del jardín detrás de nuestra casa”, respondió ella, “moriré”.
"If I don't eat some rapunzel from the garden behind our house,” she replied, “I will die."
El hombre, que la amaba demasiado, pensó: “Debo conseguirle el rapunzel, no importa lo que cueste”.
The man, who loved her very much, thought, "I must get her the rapunzel, no matter what it takes."
Así que, al caer la noche, trepó el alto muro hacia el jardín de la hechicera. Tomó rápidamente algo de rapunzel y se lo llevó a su esposa. Ella hizo una ensalada y se la comió ansiosamente. La disfrutó mucho.
So, as night fell, he climbed over the tall wall into the sorceress's garden. He quickly took some rapunzel and brought it back to his wife. She made a salad and ate it eagerly. She enjoyed it greatly.
Al día siguiente, su deseo por el rapunzel se había triplicado. El hombre tuvo que volver al jardín otra vez. Pero en cuanto trepó el muro, se impactó al ver a la hechicera.
The next day, her desire for more rapunzel had tripled. The man had to go back to the garden again. But as soon as he climbed the wall, he was shocked to see the sorceress.
“¿Cómo te atreves a entrar en mi jardín y robarme mi rapunzel como un ladrón?”, dijo ella, furiosa. “Sufrirás las consecuencias por esto”.
"How dare you enter my garden and steal my rapunzel like a thief?" she said angrily. "You will suffer for this."
“Por favor ten piedad”, rogó él. “Tuve que hacerlo. Mi esposa vio tu rapunzel y lo quería tanto que se moriría sin él. ¡El embarazo puede causar antojos de lo más misteriosos!”.
"Please have mercy," he begged. "I had to do it. My wife saw your rapunzel and wanted it so badly that she would die without it. Pregnancy can cause such mysterious cravings!"
La hechicera estaba menos enojada y dijo: “Si eso es cierto, dejaré que te lleves todo el rapunzel que quieras, pero con una condición: me darás el hijo que tendrá tu esposa. Cuidaré de él como una madre”.
The sorceress was less angry and said, "If that's true, I'll let you take as much rapunzel as you want–but on one condition: You must give me the child your wife will have. I'll take care of it like a mother."
Dominado por el miedo, el hombre aceptó todo.
Out of fear, the man agreed to everything.
Cuando la mujer tuvo a su bebé, la hechicera vino, llamó a la pequeña Rapunzel y se la llevó. Rapunzel se volvió la niña más hermosa bajo el sol. Cuando tenía doce años, la hechicera la encerró en una torre en un bosque. Dicha torre no tenía puertas o escaleras, solo una pequeña ventana en la parte superior.
When the woman had her baby, the sorceress came, named the baby girl Rapunzel, and took her away. Rapunzel became the most beautiful child under the sun. When she was twelve, the sorceress locked her in a tower in a forest. This tower had no door or stairs, just a small window at the top.

“¡Rapunzel, Rapunzel, deja caer tu cabello!”.

Rapunzel tenía un maravilloso cabello largo, brillante como oro hilado. Cuando escuchaba a la hechicera, ataba sus trenzas a un gancho junto a la ventana y dejaba caer su cabello 18 metros para que la hechicera pudiera trepar.
Rapunzel had wonderful long hair, shiny like spun gold. When she heard the sorceress, she would tie her braids to a hook by the window and let her hair drop down twenty yards for the sorceress to climb.
Años después, un príncipe cabalgaba por el bosque y escuchó una hermosa canción flotando por el aire. Siguió la melodía hasta su origen: era el hermoso canto de Rapunzel, el cual provenía de la torre. El príncipe quiso acercarse a ella, pero no podía encontrar una puerta.
Years later, a prince rode through the forest and heard a lovely song floating through the air and followed it to its source. It was Rapunzel’s beautiful singing, coming from the tower. The prince wanted to go up to her but couldn’t find a door.
Volvió a casa, pero no pudo olvidar la canción. Volvía cada día para escucharla. Una vez, escondido detrás de un árbol, vio decir a la hechicera:
He went home but couldn't forget the song. He came back every day to listen. Once, hidden behind a tree, he saw the sorceress call out:
“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, deja caer tu cabello”.
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let down your hair."
Entonces Rapunzel dejó caer su cabello, y la hechicera trepó. El príncipe pensó: “Esta debe ser la forma de entrar a la torre. Probaré mi suerte”.
Then Rapunzel let down her hair, and the sorceress climbed up. The prince thought, "This must be the way into the tower. I will try my luck."

She let her hair down, and the prince climbed up.
Al principio, Rapunzel estaba muy asustada cuando un hombre extraño subió a su torre. Pero el príncipe se dirigió amablemente hacia ella, diciéndole que su canto había conmovido tanto su corazón que tenía que conocerla.
At first, Rapunzel was very scared when a strange man came into her tower. But the prince spoke kindly to her, saying her singing had moved his heart so much that he had to meet her.
Rapunzel perdió su miedo. Cuando el príncipe le preguntó si se casaría con él, decidió que prefería estar con él a estar con la vieja hechicera.
Rapunzel lost her fear. When the prince asked her if she would marry him, she decided she would rather be with him than the old sorceress.

Decidieron que él la visitaría cada noche, ya que la vieja mujer solo venía durante el día.
They decided he would visit every night since the old woman came during the day.
La hechicera no se dio cuenta de nada hasta que Rapunzel, sin pensar, dijo: “Frau Gothel, ¿Por qué eres más pesada que el joven príncipe que estará aquí pronto?”.
The sorceress didn’t realize anything until Rapunzel, without thinking, said, "Frau Gothel, why are you heavier to pull up than the young prince who will be here soon?"
La hechicera gritó: "¡Niña malvada! ¿Qué has hecho? ¡Pensé que te mantenía alejada del mundo, pero me has engañado!"
The sorceress shouted, "You wicked child! What have you done? I thought I kept you away from the world, but you've tricked me!"
Enojada, agarró el hermoso cabello de Rapunzel, lo enrolló alrededor de su mano, tomó unas tijeras y lo cortó. Luego llevó a Rapunzel a un lugar solitario en la naturaleza y la dejó allí para que sufriera.
Angry, she grabbed Rapunzel's lovely hair, wound it around her hand, took scissors, and cut it off. Then she took Rapunzel to a lonely wilderness and left her there to suffer.
Esa misma noche, después de mandar lejos a Rapunzel, la hechicera ató el cabello cortado al gancho de la ventana. Cuando el príncipe llamó a Rapunzel para que dejara caer su cabello, ella lo arrojó por la ventana.
That same evening, after sending Rapunzel away, the sorceress tied the cut-off hair to the window hook. When the prince called for Rapunzel to let down her hair, she threw down the hair.
El príncipe subió, pero en lugar de Rapunzel, encontró a la hechicera esperando por él. Ella lo miró fijamente, furiosa.
The prince climbed up, but instead of Rapunzel, he found the sorceress waiting for him. She glared at him angrily.

"Aha!" she said mockingly. "You came for Rapunzel, but she's gone. You will never see her again."
El príncipe estaba devastado. En su desesperación, saltó desde la torre. Sobrevivió, pero aterrizó en unas espinas que lo dejaron ciego. Vagó ciegamente por el bosque, sobreviviendo apenas con hierbas y raíces, llorando por su amor perdido.
The prince was devastated. In his despair, he jumped from the tower. He survived, but he landed in thorns that blinded him. He wandered, blind, through the forest, surviving only on grass and roots, crying for his lost love.
Durante años, deambuló tristemente hasta que se encontró en el mismo páramo donde Rapunzel vivía ahora, miserable, con sus hijos mellizos.
For years, he roamed sadly until he found himself in the wilderness where Rapunzel now lived, miserable, with her twin children.
Escuchó una voz que le pareció familiar. Se acercó y, cuando estuvo más cerca, Rapunzel lo reconoció. Ella lloró y lo abrazó. Sus lágrimas cayeron en sus ojos, y de repente, podía ver de nuevo. La llevó a su reino, donde fueron felizmente bienvenidos. Vivieron juntos alegremente por muchos años.
He heard a voice that seemed familiar. He walked towards it, and when he got closer, Rapunzel recognized him. She cried and embraced him. Her tears fell into his eyes, and suddenly, he could see again. He took her to his kingdom, where they were welcomed happily. They lived joyfully together for many years.
