Hansel and Gretel (part 1 of 2)
Cerca de un gran bosque, vivía un pobre leñador con su esposa y sus dos hijos, Hansel y Gretel. Eran tan pobres que cuando una hambruna azotó la tierra, ni siquiera podían permitirse comprar pan.
Near a big forest, a poor woodcutter lived with his wife and two children, Hansel and Gretel. They were so poor that when a famine hit the land, they couldn't even afford bread.
Una noche, el leñador estaba acostado en su cama, preocupado. Le dijo a su esposa: “¿Qué nos pasará? ¿Cómo podremos alimentar a nuestros hijos cuando no tenemos nada?”
One night, the woodcutter was lying in bed, worried. He said to his wife, "What will happen to us? How can we feed our children when we have nothing?"
Su exhausta y desesperada esposa dijo: “Mañana, llevemos a los niños a lo profundo del bosque. Haremos una fogata para ellos, les daremos un poco de pan y los dejaremos. Ellos no encontrarán el camino a casa y no tendremos que preocuparnos más por alimentarlos”.
His exhausted and hopeless wife said, "Tomorrow, let's take the children deep into the forest. We'll make a fire for them, give them a little bread, and leave them. They won't find their way back, and we won't have to worry about feeding them anymore."
“No puedo dejar a mis propios hijos solos en el bosque”, dijo él. “¡Los animales salvajes se los comerán!”
"I can't leave my own children alone in the forest," he said. "Wild animals will eat them!"
“Entonces los cuatro moriremos de hambre”, respondió ella. No le dio paz hasta que él accedió.
“Then all four of us will starve,” she responded. She gave him no peace until he agreed.
Hansel y Gretel, quienes estaban despiertos por el hambre, escucharon el plan. Gretel comenzó a llorar, pero Hansel la consoló. “No te preocupes, tengo un plan”, dijo él.
Hansel and Gretel, who were awake because of hunger, overheard this plan. Gretel started to cry, but Hansel comforted her. "Don't worry, I have a plan," he said.
Cuando sus padres dormían, Hansel salió sigilosamente. Se llenó los bolsillos con piedras blancas y luego volvió a la cama, diciéndole a Gretel que durmiera sin preocuparse.
When their parents were asleep, Hansel sneaked out. He filled his pockets with white stones and then went back to bed, telling Gretel to sleep without worry.
A la mañana siguiente, su madre los despertó temprano para dar un paseo por el bosque. Les dio a cada uno un pequeño pedazo de pan para el almuerzo y les dijo que no se lo comieran antes del medio día ya que no recibirían más.
The next morning, their mother woke them up early for a trip to the woods. She gave them each a small piece of bread for lunch and told them not to eat it before noon because they wouldn't get more.
Como los bolsillos de Hansel estaban llenos de piedras, Gretel guardó el pan en su delantal. Todos se adentraron en el bosque. Hansel constantemente se detenía y miraba hacia atrás, hacia la casa.
Gretel put the bread in her apron since Hansel's pockets were full of pebbles. They all went into the forest. Hansel kept stopping and looking back at the house.
Su padre preguntó: “¿Por qué sigues deteniéndote?”
His father asked, "Why do you keep stopping?"
Hansel le dijo que estaba mirando a su gato blanco, despidiéndose de él. En realidad, Hansel estaba dejando caer las piedras brillantes a lo largo del camino mientras caminaban.
Hansel said he was looking at his white cat saying goodbye. Actually, Hansel was dropping the shiny pebbles along the path as they walked.
Cuando llegaron a la mitad del bosque, el padre dijo: “Hijos, colecten un poco de madera. Haré una fogata, así no tendrán frío”.
When they reached the middle of the forest, the father said, "Children, collect some wood. I'll make a fire, so you won't be cold."
Hansel y Gretel colectaron una gran pila de ramitas. Encendieron un fuego vigoroso. Su madre les dijo: “Descansen junto al fuego. Iremos a cortar más madera. Vendremos por ustedes luego”.
Hansel and Gretel gathered a big pile of twigs. They lit a roaring fire. Their mother said, "Rest by the fire. We'll go and cut more wood. We'll come back for you later."
Los niños se sentaron junto al fuego. Al mediodía, comieron sus pequeños trozos de pan. Escucharon sonidos de hachazos y pensaron que su padre estaba cerca. Sin embargo, esto era solo una distracción. Su padre había atado una rama a un árbol para que golpeara contra su tronco cuando el viento soplara.
The children sat by the fire. At noon, they ate their small pieces of bread. They heard chopping sounds and thought their father was nearby. This was only a distraction, though. Their father had tied a branch to a tree so it would knock against the tree trunk as the wind blew.
Se sentaron durante un buen rato hasta que les dio mucho sueño y se acurrucaron para tomar una siesta. Cuando despertaron, ya era de noche. Gretel comenzó a llorar: “¿Cómo saldremos del bosque?”
They sat for a long time until they became very sleepy and curled up for a nap. When they woke up, it was already night. Gretel started crying, "How will we get out of the forest?"
“No te preocupes”, dijo Hansel. “Cuando se alce la luna, encontraremos nuestro camino”.
"Don't worry," Hansel said. "When the moon rises, we'll find our way."
La luna llena se alzó y Hansel tomó a Gretel de la mano. Siguieron las piedras brillantes, que resplandecían a la luz de la luna y los guiaron de regreso a su hogar. Caminaron durante toda la noche y llegaron a su casa al amanecer.
The full moon rose, and Hansel took Gretel's hand. They followed the shining pebbles, which shone in the moonlight, and led them back home. They walked all night and reached their house at dawn.
Tocaron la puerta y su madre les abrió. Estaba enojada y dijo: “¡Niños traviesos! ¿Por qué durmieron durante tanto tiempo en el bosque? Creímos que nunca volverían.
They knocked, and their mother opened the door. She was angry and said, "You naughty children! Why did you sleep so long in the forest? We thought you were never coming back."
Pero su padre estaba muy feliz de verlos. Él no había querido dejarlos en el bosque.
But their father was so happy to see them. He had not wanted to leave them in the woods.
Poco después, sin embargo, volvió la escasez de alimentos. Una noche, los niños escucharon a su madre decirle a su padre: “Otra vez nos hemos quedado sin comida. Solo tenemos la mitad de un pan. Debemos dejar a los niños en el bosque de nuevo, pero está vez aún más adentro, para que no puedan regresar”.
Soon, however, there was another food shortage. One evening, the children heard their mother telling their father, "We have run out of food again. We only have half a loaf of bread. We must leave the children in the forest again, but this time deeper, so they can't come back."
Su padre estaba triste y quería compartir su último alimento con sus hijos, pero la mujer se mantuvo firme.
The father was sad and wanted to share their last food with the children, but the woman held firm.
Los niños estaban despiertos y escucharon todo. Hansel trató de salir a recolectar piedras otra vez, pero la puerta estaba cerrada.
The children were awake and heard everything. Hansel tried to get out to collect pebbles again, but the door was locked.
“No llores, Gretel” dijo Hansel. “Ahora duerme. Estaremos bien”.
"Don't cry, Gretel," Hansel said. "Sleep now. We will be okay."
A la mañana siguiente su madre los despertó. Obtuvieron pedazos de pan aún más pequeños que antes. En el camino, Hansel desmigajó su pan y dejó caer trocitos en el suelo.
The next morning, their mother woke them up. They got even smaller pieces of bread than before. On their way to the forest, Hansel crumbled his bread and dropped pieces on the ground.
“¿Por qué sigues deteniéndote, Hansel? Preguntó su padre.
"Why do you keep stopping, Hansel?" asked his father.
“Veo a mi paloma en el tejado despidiéndose”, respondió Hansel.
"I see my pigeon on the roof saying goodbye," Hansel replied.
Mientras caminaban, Hansel dejó caer todas sus migajas de pan. Esta vez, su madrastra los llevó más profundo en el bosque de lo que alguna vez habían estado.
As they walked, Hansel dropped all his breadcrumbs. This time, their stepmother took them deeper into the forest than they had ever been.
Una vez más, encendió una gran fogata y dijo: “Siéntense aquí y descansen. Los buscaremos en la noche, después de que terminemos de cortar madera”.
Once again, she made a big fire and said, "Sit here and rest. We'll get you in the evening after we finish cutting wood."
Al mediodía, Gretel compartió su pan con Hansel. Se durmieron y despertaron de noche.
At noon, Gretel shared her bread with Hansel. They fell asleep and woke up at night.
“No te preocupes”, le dijo Hansel a Gretel cuando salió la luna. “Encontraré el rastro de migajas de pan”. Pero las aves se habían comido las migajas, por lo que no pudieron encontrar el camino de regreso.
"Don't worry," Hansel told Gretel when the moon came up. "I'll find the breadcrumb trail." But the birds had eaten all the crumbs, so they couldn't find the way back.
