Cinderella (part 1 of 2)
Había una vez un caballero viudo. Tenía una hija joven que era dulce y amable, tal como su madre. Después de un tiempo, se volvió a casar. Tristemente, su nueva esposa era arrogante y cruel. Ella tenía dos hijas de su primer matrimonio, y eran tal como ella.
Once, there was a gentleman widower. He had a young daughter who was sweet and kind, much like her mother. After a while, he married again. Sadly, his new wife was arrogant and cruel. She had two daughters from her first marriage, and they were just like her.
Tan pronto como estuvieron casados, la madrastra empezó a mostrar su verdadera naturaleza. Estaba celosa de la hija del hombre porque ella era naturalmente buena y hermosa, haciendo ver a sus hijas aún menos agradables.
As soon as they were married, the stepmother started showing her true nature. She was jealous of the man's daughter because she was naturally good and beautiful, making her own daughters seem even less pleasant.
La madrastra hacía que la hija del caballero hiciera las tareas más difíciles de la casa. Ella lavaba los platos, limpiaba la cocina, y ordenaba la habitación de su madrastra y sus hermanastras. Ella tenía que dormir en el frío ático en un simple lecho de paja, mientras sus hermanastras tenían buenas habitaciones con camas de felpa.
The stepmother made the man's daughter do the hardest chores in the house. She washed dishes, cleaned the kitchen, and tidied the rooms of her stepmother and stepsisters. She had to sleep in a cold attic on a simple straw bed, while her stepsisters had fine rooms with plush beds.
La joven chica aguantaba todo sin quejarse. No podía decirle a su padre porque él solo parecía ver el lado bueno de su nueva esposa. Pasaba tanto tiempo cerca del fuego de la cocina que su ropa estaba siempre sucia con cenizas.
The young girl endured everything without complaining. She couldn't tell her father because he seemed to only see the good side of his new wife. She spent so much time by the kitchen fire that her clothes were always dirty with ashes.
Su madrastra y su hermanastra mayor empezaron a llamarla “Chica-ceniza”. La hermanastra menor, quien era un poco menos cruel, la llamaba “Cenicienta”. Pero aún en sus ropas simples, Cenicienta era mucho más bella que sus hermanastras en sus conjuntos finos.
Her stepmother and older stepsister started calling her 'Cinderwench.' The younger stepsister, who was a bit less cruel, called her 'Cinderella.' But even in her plain clothes, Cinderella was much more beautiful than her stepsisters in their fine outfits.
Un día, el príncipe decidió tener un gran baile e invitó a toda la gente importante. Las hermanastras de Cenicienta fueron invitadas y estaban muy emocionadas. Se pasaron el día entero hablando sobre qué podrían vestir. Cenicienta tenía que ayudarlas a prepararse, planchando sus vestidos y preparando sus accesorios, lo que hacía aún más difícil de soportar el saber que ella no podía ir.
One day, the prince decided to have a big dance party and invited all the notable people. Cinderella's stepsisters were invited, and they were very excited. They spent the whole day talking about what they would wear. Cinderella had to help them get ready, ironing their dresses and preparing their accessories, which made it even harder to bear the knowledge that she could not go.
La hermana mayor dijo: “Yo usaré mi vestido de terciopelo rojo con el adorno especial francés”
The older sister said, "I'll wear my red velvet dress with the special French trim."
La menor dijo: “Yo usaré mi capa dorada con flores y mis joyas de diamantes”.
The younger one said, "I'll wear my gold cloak with flowers and my diamond jewelry.”
Apenas comieron durante dos días y luego rompieron varios cordones al intentar ajustar sus corsés. Pasaron horas mirándose en el espejo.
They barely ate for two days, and then they broke several laces trying to tighten their corsets. They spent hours looking at themselves in the mirror.
Las hermanastras llamaron al mejor peluquero para que las peinara. Mientras Cenicienta las ayudaba con el maquillaje, le preguntaron de forma burlona: “Cenicienta, ¿no te encantaría ir al baile?”
The stepsisters called for the best hairdresser to style their hair. While Cinderella was helping them with their makeup, they asked her mockingly, "Cinderella, wouldn't you love to go to the ball?"
Ella respondió: “Ustedes solo se están burlando de mí. No puedo ir a tal evento”
She replied, "You're just making fun of me. I can't go to such an event."
Ellas se rieron: “Por supuesto, no puedes. ¡Imagina a una Chica-Ceniza en el baile!”
They laughed, "Of course, you can't. Imagine a Cinderwench at a ball!"
Cualquiera que no fuese Cenicienta habría arreglado su cabello de manera desaliñada solo para avergonzarlas. Pero Cenicienta era buena. Las ayudó a prepararse pacientemente. Finalmente, el día del baile llegó. Ellas se fueron del palacio y Cenicienta las observó hasta que ya no pudo verlas más. Luego, empezó a llorar.
Anyone but Cinderella would have fixed their hair awry just to embarrass them. But Cinderella was good. She patiently helped them get ready. Finally, the day of the ball arrived. They left for the palace, and Cinderella watched them go until she could see them no longer. Then, she started to cry.
Su madrina, quien en realidad era un hada, la vio llorando y le preguntó qué sucedía.
Her godmother, who was actually a fairy, saw her crying and asked what was wrong.
"Desearía poder… Desearía poder ir al baile”, dijo Cenicienta entre lágrimas.
"I wish I could... I wish I could go to the ball," Cinderella managed to say through her tears.
Su hada madrina conocía las dificultades de Cenicienta. Sabía que Cenicienta se merecía esta noche de felicidad. Así que le dijo: “Ve al jardín y tráeme una calabaza”.
Her godmother knew of Cinderella's hardships. She knew Cinderella deserved this night of happiness. She told Cinderella, "Go to the garden and bring me a pumpkin."
Cenicienta encontró la mejor calabaza que pudo y se la llevó a su hada madrina. No tenía idea de cómo una calabaza podría ayudarla a ir al baile. Su hada madrina vació la calabaza y luego la tocó con una varita mágica. De repente, la calabaza se convirtió en un hermoso carruaje dorado.
Cinderella found the best pumpkin she could and brought it to her godmother. She had no idea how a pumpkin could help her get to the ball. Her godmother emptied the pumpkin and then touched it with her magic wand. Suddenly, the pumpkin turned into a beautiful golden coach.
Luego, el hada madrina encontró a seis ratones en una trampa. Cenicienta abrió la trampa y el hada madrina tocó a cada ratón con su varita mientras ellos corrían. Cada uno se transformó en un elegante caballo gris.
Then, the godmother found six mice in a mousetrap. Cinderella opened the trap, and the godmother tapped each mouse with her wand as they ran out. They each transformed into an elegant grey horse.
Convirtió a uno de los ratones en un cochero con una apuesta barba. Seis lagartijas se convirtieron en seis lacayos vestidos en uniformes dorados y plateados.
She turned a rat into a coachman with a handsome beard. Six lizards became six footmen dressed in gold and silver uniforms.
Entonces el hada le preguntó a Cenicienta: “¿Estás feliz de ir al baile ahora?”
Then the fairy asked Cinderella, "Are you happy to go to the ball now?"
“Sí,” respondió Cenicienta, “pero ¿Qué pasará con mis ropas viejas?”
"Yes," Cinderella replied, "but what about my old clothes?"
Con una sacudida de su varita, el hada madrina transformó los harapos de Cenicienta en un asombroso vestido hecho de oro y plata, decorado con joyas brillantes. También le dio un par de hermosas zapatillas de cristal, las más bonitas del mundo.
With a wave of her wand, the godmother transformed Cinderella's rags into a stunning dress made of gold and silver, decorated with sparkling jewels. She also gave Cinderella a pair of beautiful glass slippers, the prettiest in the world.
Llena de alegría, Cenicienta se montó en su carruaje. Su hada madrina le advirtió que dejara el baile antes de la medianoche. A la medianoche, la magia desaparecería y todo volvería a la normalidad: el carruaje a una calabaza, los caballos a ratones, el cochero en una rata, los lacayos a lagartijas y su vestido a harapos.
Overjoyed, Cinderella stepped into her coach. Her godmother warned her to leave the ball before midnight. At midnight, the magic would disappear and everything would turn back: the coach to a pumpkin, the horses to mice, the coachman to a rat, the footmen to lizards, and her dress to rags.
Cenicienta prometió irse a tiempo y partió, llena de emoción.
Cinderella promised to leave on time and set off, full of excitement.
Cuando llegó al palacio, le avisaron al príncipe de la llegada de una princesa desconocida. Se apresuró en conocerla, tomó su mano y la guió hasta el salón de baile. Todos se detuvieron y la miraron, asombrados por su belleza. Todas las señoritas la estudiaron e hicieron planes para mandar a hacer vestidos justo como el de ella.
When she pulled up to the palace, the prince was told an unknown princess had just arrived. He rushed to meet her, took her hand, and led her to the ballroom. Everyone stopped and stared at her, amazed by her beauty. The ladies all studied her and made plans to have dresses made just like hers.
