Cinderella (part 1 of 2)
C'era una volta un signore vedovo. Aveva una figlia giovane che era dolce e gentile, proprio come la madre. Dopo qualche tempo, si risposò. Purtroppo, la sua nuova moglie era arrogante e crudele. Aveva due figlie dal primo matrimonio ed erano proprio come lei.
Once, there was a gentleman widower. He had a young daughter who was sweet and kind, much like her mother. After a while, he married again. Sadly, his new wife was arrogant and cruel. She had two daughters from her first marriage, and they were just like her.
Non appena si sposarono, la matrigna iniziò a mostrare la sua vera natura. Era gelosa della figlia dell'uomo perché era naturalmente buona e bella, facendo sembrare le proprie figlie ancora meno piacevoli.
As soon as they were married, the stepmother started showing her true nature. She was jealous of the man's daughter because she was naturally good and beautiful, making her own daughters seem even less pleasant.
La matrigna faceva fare alla figlia dell'uomo i lavori più duri della casa. Lavava i piatti, puliva la cucina e metteva in ordine le stanze della matrigna e delle sorellastre. Doveva dormire in una fredda soffitta su un semplice letto di paglia, mentre le sorellastre avevano stanze raffinate con letti lussuosi.
The stepmother made the man's daughter do the hardest chores in the house. She washed dishes, cleaned the kitchen, and tidied the rooms of her stepmother and stepsisters. She had to sleep in a cold attic on a simple straw bed, while her stepsisters had fine rooms with plush beds.
La giovane sopportava tutto senza lamentarsi. Non poteva dirlo a suo padre perché lui sembrava vedere solo il lato positivo della sua nuova moglie. Passava così tanto tempo accanto al fuoco della cucina che i suoi vestiti erano sempre sporchi di cenere.
The young girl endured everything without complaining. She couldn't tell her father because he seemed to only see the good side of his new wife. She spent so much time by the kitchen fire that her clothes were always dirty with ashes.
La matrigna e la sorellastra maggiore iniziarono a chiamarla "Cenerentola". La sorellastra più giovane, un po' meno crudele, la chiamò "Cenerentola". Ma anche nei suoi abiti semplici, Cenerentola era molto più bella delle sorellastre nei loro abiti raffinati.
Her stepmother and older stepsister started calling her 'Cinderwench.' The younger stepsister, who was a bit less cruel, called her 'Cinderella.' But even in her plain clothes, Cinderella was much more beautiful than her stepsisters in their fine outfits.
Un giorno, il principe decise di dare una grande festa da ballo e invitò tutte le persone importanti. Le sorellastre di Cenerentola furono invitate ed erano molto eccitate. Passarono tutto il giorno a parlare di cosa avrebbero indossato. Cenerentola dovette aiutarle a prepararsi, stirando i loro abiti e preparando i loro accessori, il che rese ancora più difficile sopportare la consapevolezza di non poter andare.
One day, the prince decided to have a big dance party and invited all the notable people. Cinderella's stepsisters were invited, and they were very excited. They spent the whole day talking about what they would wear. Cinderella had to help them get ready, ironing their dresses and preparing their accessories, which made it even harder to bear the knowledge that she could not go.
La sorella maggiore disse: "Indosserò il mio vestito di velluto rosso con le speciali decorazioni francesi".
The older sister said, "I'll wear my red velvet dress with the special French trim."
Il più giovane disse: "Indosserò il mio mantello d'oro con i fiori e i miei gioielli di diamanti".
The younger one said, "I'll wear my gold cloak with flowers and my diamond jewelry.”
Mangiarono a malapena per due giorni e si ruppero diversi lacci nel tentativo di stringere i corsetti. Passarono ore a guardarsi allo specchio.
They barely ate for two days, and then they broke several laces trying to tighten their corsets. They spent hours looking at themselves in the mirror.
Le sorellastre chiamarono il miglior parrucchiere per acconciarle. Mentre Cenerentola le aiutava a truccarsi, le chiesero beffarde: "Cenerentola, non ti piacerebbe andare al ballo?".
The stepsisters called for the best hairdresser to style their hair. While Cinderella was helping them with their makeup, they asked her mockingly, "Cinderella, wouldn't you love to go to the ball?"
Lei rispose: "Mi stai solo prendendo in giro. Non posso andare a un evento del genere".
She replied, "You're just making fun of me. I can't go to such an event."
E loro risero: "Certo, non si può. Immaginate una Cenerentola a un ballo!".
They laughed, "Of course, you can't. Imagine a Cinderwench at a ball!"
Chiunque, ma non Cenerentola, avrebbe sistemato i loro capelli in modo strano solo per metterli in imbarazzo. Ma Cenerentola era buona. Le aiutò pazientemente a prepararsi. Finalmente arrivò il giorno del ballo. Partirono per il palazzo e Cenerentola li guardò fino a quando non riuscì più a vederli. Allora cominciò a piangere.
Anyone but Cinderella would have fixed their hair awry just to embarrass them. But Cinderella was good. She patiently helped them get ready. Finally, the day of the ball arrived. They left for the palace, and Cinderella watched them go until she could see them no longer. Then, she started to cry.
La sua madrina, che in realtà era una fata, la vide piangere e le chiese che cosa avesse.
Her godmother, who was actually a fairy, saw her crying and asked what was wrong.
"Vorrei poter... Vorrei poter andare al ballo", riuscì a dire Cenerentola tra le lacrime.
"I wish I could... I wish I could go to the ball," Cinderella managed to say through her tears.
La madrina conosceva le difficoltà di Cenerentola. Sapeva che Cenerentola meritava questa notte di felicità. Disse a Cenerentola: "Vai in giardino e portami una zucca".
Her godmother knew of Cinderella's hardships. She knew Cinderella deserved this night of happiness. She told Cinderella, "Go to the garden and bring me a pumpkin."
Cenerentola trovò la zucca migliore che poteva e la portò alla sua madrina. Non aveva idea di come una zucca potesse aiutarla ad arrivare al ballo. La madrina svuotò la zucca e la toccò con la bacchetta magica. Improvvisamente, la zucca si trasformò in una bellissima carrozza dorata.
Cinderella found the best pumpkin she could and brought it to her godmother. She had no idea how a pumpkin could help her get to the ball. Her godmother emptied the pumpkin and then touched it with her magic wand. Suddenly, the pumpkin turned into a beautiful golden coach.
Poi la madrina trovò sei topi in una trappola per topi. Cenerentola aprì la trappola e la madrina diede un colpetto di bacchetta a ogni topo che usciva di corsa. Ognuno di loro si trasformò in un elegante cavallo grigio.
Then, the godmother found six mice in a mousetrap. Cinderella opened the trap, and the godmother tapped each mouse with her wand as they ran out. They each transformed into an elegant grey horse.
Trasformò un topo in un cocchiere con una bella barba. Sei lucertole si trasformarono in sei camerieri vestiti con uniformi d'oro e d'argento.
She turned a rat into a coachman with a handsome beard. Six lizards became six footmen dressed in gold and silver uniforms.
Poi la fata chiese a Cenerentola: "Sei contenta di andare al ballo adesso?"
Then the fairy asked Cinderella, "Are you happy to go to the ball now?"
"Sì", rispose Cenerentola, "ma che ne sarà dei miei vecchi vestiti?"
"Yes," Cinderella replied, "but what about my old clothes?"
Con un colpo di bacchetta, la madrina trasformò gli stracci di Cenerentola in uno splendido abito d'oro e d'argento, decorato con gioielli scintillanti. Inoltre, regalò a Cenerentola un paio di bellissime scarpette di cristallo, le più belle del mondo.
With a wave of her wand, the godmother transformed Cinderella's rags into a stunning dress made of gold and silver, decorated with sparkling jewels. She also gave Cinderella a pair of beautiful glass slippers, the prettiest in the world.
Felicissima, Cenerentola salì sulla sua carrozza. La madrina la avvertì di lasciare il ballo prima di mezzanotte. A mezzanotte, la magia sarebbe scomparsa e tutto sarebbe tornato indietro: la carrozza in una zucca, i cavalli in topi, il cocchiere in un ratto, i camerieri in lucertole e il suo vestito in stracci.
Overjoyed, Cinderella stepped into her coach. Her godmother warned her to leave the ball before midnight. At midnight, the magic would disappear and everything would turn back: the coach to a pumpkin, the horses to mice, the coachman to a rat, the footmen to lizards, and her dress to rags.
Cenerentola promise di partire in orario e partì, piena di entusiasmo.
Cinderella promised to leave on time and set off, full of excitement.
Quando si accostò al palazzo, al principe fu detto che era appena arrivata una principessa sconosciuta. Le corse incontro, la prese per mano e la condusse nella sala da ballo. Tutti si fermarono a guardarla, stupiti dalla sua bellezza. Tutte le dame la studiarono e fecero progetti per farsi confezionare abiti come il suo.
When she pulled up to the palace, the prince was told an unknown princess had just arrived. He rushed to meet her, took her hand, and led her to the ballroom. Everyone stopped and stared at her, amazed by her beauty. The ladies all studied her and made plans to have dresses made just like hers.
